Hipster contemporary subculture refers to the postmodern culture of young urban adults. The hipster culture is big in indie and alternative music, with a high interest in nonmainstream fashion such as vintage and thrift store clothing, independent views, and alternative lifeway’s. Christian Lorentzen of “Time Out New York” said that “hipsterism fetishizes the authentic” elements of all of the “fringe movements of the postwar era—beat, hippie, punk, even grunge”.
This cultural phenomena appreciates the arts, indie-rock bands, creativity, intelligence, and banter. Hipsterism is a state of mind and thinking, interwoven with a visually distinct style in fashion. Hipsters try to stay clear of culturally mainstream companies and are appreciative and inspired by old school, vintage fashions.
Hipsters dislike the culturally-ignorant behaviors and views of mainstream consumers and products, and they are seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, hipsters don’t see fashion as a materialistic thing, it’s more of an expression of who they are as individuals, people don’t have to spend a lot of money on fashion, people can still express themselves in fashion while still saving money. This culture is known for edgy hair styles such as wild cuts and bangs, they are creative stylists and independents with no fear to look or be different.
I think the Hipster culture plays an important rule within our contemporary pop culture because its shows humans that being different and expressing yourself is accepted and ok, it’s also important for people to see that spending less money for material things is ok, embracing old things such as vintage and antique things is important because it’s always good to remember the past and just slow down and not be in a rush to go with the evolving future. This genre of people have brought great music to life and out into the world, music is a huge part of the world it inspires people and fills people with emotions, and the hipsters have contributed to that, bands such as MGMT, Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers Etc.
I think that this phenomena would be an important part of our Pop Culture studies, I think this because it’s important as college students to embrace and view the different and diverse cultures that are relevant in our pop culture that we live in.
I also think that studying Hipsters would be interesting and engaging because I read that Portland State University is named the number 2 most hipster school. Students are surrounded by many hole-in-the-wall coffee shops, thrifty styles, weird mustaches (another hipster staple), and underground indie bands. Portland Oregon is also listed the number 2 Best City for Hipsters by Travel + Leisure magazine.
